Opening in 1938, the Tower Theatre is Sacramento's oldest remaining, continuously running picture palace. The first film ever shown at the Tower was Algiers starring Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamar, which you could see for 25 cents general admission.
It's not an indie theatre. It's owned by an international corporation with theaters in the US, Australia, and New Zealand. They do show indie films though. I wish it was locally owned and operated.
The only theater in town that consistently
provides interesting and thought provoking
films! Films you wouldn't otherwise get to
see until they came out on DVD.
One of the city's greatest landmarks, and where I have seen so many memorable films over decades. I have an even more personal love for the Tower--One windy, rainy night I was on foot slogging through flooded streets, unable to find my way to Broadway in time to catch the last bus home, and just before I began to panic I looked up, and there it was--neon, beautiful neon. I had become so turned around that I was steadily moving farther and farther away from where I needed to be. The lights of the tower set me in the right direction. Thanks, Tower. You got me home safely that night.
Twenty-five years ago I took my two sons, ages 3 and 5 years, to the Tower to see my favorite band, the Beatles, in a re-release of the movie A Hard Days Night. What a wonderful memory, watching them watch that movie, rocking back and forth in the Tower Theater chairs. What a landmark!!!
