This is my favorite eating spot and bar in all of California. And I am a foodie. Jamie's may look like a dive on the outside and a western saloon on the inside, but the food, the people, the bar, and Jamie his ol' self are all top shelf. Jamie is tall, lanky, and amiable and does the cooking himself. Jamie's is not open on the weekends because Jamie is in the kitchen prepping for the upcoming week. Unless I bring a group, I always eat at the bar. In fact, it's the only bar my wife will sit at to eat. The three main bartenders (whom I know, at least) Alan, Chrissy, and Matt are outstanding, friendly, funny and mnemonic marvels. The bar crowd is a predominantly "locals" crowd, including some of our lesser known capitol folks and media types. The food is all you could ask for and they will serve it your way upon request. Everything is cooked fresh every day. My favorite lunch there is a hot, open face turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. The whole turkey is roasted that day and the taters are real, creamy, and tasty as is the homemade gravy. I like all dark meat for my sandwich and extra gravy to treat my ailing heart. No problem, no rolling eyes, just a cheerful, "Sure!" when I order. Their calamari dinner features actual calamari steaks and not tentacles and rings. Two large steaks, deep fried or sautéed as you wish. If you are at the bar and want the steaks cut into strips and deep fried, served with cocktail sauce or tartar sauce or both, as an appetizer to go with your martini...It's not on the menu but I asked and "Sure, no problem!" One day, for lunch, I asked if I could have the calamari steak put on a toasted hamburger bun with melted American cheese and tartar sauce (a first for them) and got a cheerful "Sure, no problem!" And a couple of years ago, Jamie's won the Sacramento competition for The Best Club Sandwich, traditional division. Jamie's has specials every day, written on a small chalk board, as well as a regular cardboard menu. The chalkboard listings are wiped off the board as they run out that day. The smoked brisket sandwich is a big lunchtime favorite and quite a few fish entrées are available every day. If you've never had Jamie's crabcakes, you haven't had crabcakes....unless you're from Maryland. For the most part, the food is good ol' comfort food as made by yore ma...if your ma went to CordonBleu but didn't succumb to using all the exotic spices no one carries in their home kitchen. All ingredients and produce are exceedingly fresh, the food prepared daily and expertly, the service first rate and the patrons a nice local mix of youngish and age-qualified.
