Julie Hurst, RYT, ICCE is a certified Childbirth Educator and teaches Childbirth and New Parenting classes at Sutter Memorial. While working as a Childbirth Educator, she became a Registered Yoga Teacher with an emphasis in Prenatal and Postpartum Yoga. She taught Prenatal and Postpartum Yoga at the Sutter PregnaGym until it closed in November of 2007. She also taught Yoga classes at UC Davis Hospital for the RN's self care classes and for their retreats.
Prenatal Yoga:
The fundamental element of this class is to prepare the mind and body for the process of labor and delivery. Poses are taught to strengthen the body for the labor process. She also teaches positive positions that open the pelvis, which moms can use while in labor. Poses used in class will help to relieve the discomforts that often accompany pregnancy and are modified for all trimesters. Mom's are taught to recognize stress and tension that they carry in their body and to use their breath as a means of release. Prenatal yoga is a place to connect with other pregnant women and focus on ways to cope with physical and emotional changes brought on by pregnancy. No prior knowledge of yoga is needed to join the class.
Postpartum Yoga:
Julie offers a unique place where moms can workout while keeping their babies with them. This class incorporates yoga for stretching and strengthening, abdominal work to tone the stomach, and free weights to build muscle. Mom's connect with each other and build a community within the class that often leads to extended friendships outside of class.
Women's Hatha Yoga:
This class is for the woman seeking a place to connect with her body. We will use our breath to move through poses that help to stretch and strengthen the body. Time is spent focusing on the structure of poses to increase body awareness and proper positioning. This class is a good place for beginners to enter into a yoga practice because modifications are taught and a great place for those wanting to continue to grow in their practice. The class ends in final relaxation, allowing you to further let go of any remaining stress from the day.
